  • General Questions

    • Question: My child still reverses her letters and numbers. Does this mean that she is dyslexic?
    • Answer: It is normal for children to reverse letters and numbers all the way up to second grade. In fact, research shows that contrary to popular belief, people with dyslexia do not necessarily reverse letters and numbers.
    • Question: My child is still reading below grade level. Is this something that s/he will grow out of at a later age?
    • Answer:  There are many reasons why children struggle to learn how to read. I do not know your child's learning needs, so we cannot tell you if it is something s/he will grow out of in time. But, it is important to know that reading is not a natural process, it must be learned. The latest research shows that the building blocks to reading is phonological awareness. If your child is struggling in this area, it is necessary to find a program that will meet your child's needs.
    • Question: Even though my child has learned all of the sounds and letters, s/he does not remember them or apply them in reading or writing. What does this mean?
    • Answer: If a child continues to learn the sounds and letters and is unable to retain them or apply them to reading and writing, there may be a few things happening. To begin, it may be a short term memory issue and or the inability to retrieve the information and apply it. There may also be an issue with being able to integrate the auditory and visual information. It is hard to say without completing an assessment to determine the underlying cause(s).
    • Question: My child has difficulty listening and following auditory directions. Will s/he grow out of it?
    • Answer: There are many reasons why children have difficulty listening and following directions. Your child may need a hearing test to determine if s/he can hear all of the sounds properly. Other research shows that even though children can hear properly, they are unable to process the information they are hearing and this is called auditory processing. Again, it is essential to get an assessment in these areas to determine the causes
